Latin Music U*S*A
Airs: October 12 and 19 on WGBH 2
From the South Bronx to South Beach, Texas to L.A. — Latin rhythms pulsate through 21st century America. Now, WGBH and the BBC – co-producers of Masterpiece, Rock and Roll and many other award-winning programs – are joining forces once again to celebrate the irresistible music of Latinos through Latin Music USA. A multiplatform extravaganza, Latin Music USA includes two 2-hour primetime TV broadcasts.
Narrated by acclaimed actor Jimmy Smits, slated to air in Fall 2009 during Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Music USA tells the story of the rise of a new American music created by Latinos in the United States, and explores the profound but largely unrecognized influence of Latin sounds in rock, jazz, hip hop, mainstream music and rhythm and blues. Going back to the deep roots of the music in the Caribbean, Mexico and the U.S., the project highlights the stories of Latino superstars, including Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Ruben Blades, Daddy Yankee, Linda Rondstadt, Juanes, Los Tigres del Norte, Willie Colón and more.
