NEW LOCAL NEWS PROGRAM COMING TO GBH
WHAT’S HAPPENING AD SPENDING DURING THE TRADE WARS

Karlis Collins
Director of Marketing, LCS

At a time when local news coverage is declining across the country, GBH News is honored to announce two newly imagined local programs: GBH News Rooted and Greater Boston (new title to be determined).
In 1968, GBH debuted Say Brother, a public affairs show focused on the issues and concerns of the Black community. In 1997, the show was rebranded to Basic Black, and GBH’s Callie Crossley was the most recent host.
Host Paris Alston explores current events, elevates underrepresented voices, and highlights joy in the Black experience through discussions and interviews.
Rooted will broadcast on YouTube, TV, and radio, reaching audiences where they want, when they want. And they want GBH News Rooted. “Did the Economic Blackout Boycott Work?” garnered 458k views in under a week 1.

Greater Boston, previously hosted by Jim Braude, host of Boston Public Radio on GBH 89.7, will launch later this year and will be distributed across GBH’s platforms.
That covers the “more local” part of the headline. Now for “most trusted”. For the third year in a row, GBH was rated as the most trusted media outlet in the Greater Boston area2. When trust in institutions is at an all-time low, this is big news. And it’s an incredible opportunity for sponsors to reach the local community in a brand-safe, trusted environment.
We understand that you have many options to choose from when thinking about getting your message out there. We also understand it’s getting harder and harder to decide where to put your message. Contact us to learn why supporting public media through a corporate sponsorship is an effective way to market your business, increase brand visibility, and have a positive impact on the community you operate in.

…Maybe the question is “What’s not happening out there?”
Rising concerns about inflation and trade wars are expected to slow down growth in ad spending – from an 8.7% increase in 2024 to 5.3% in 2025 – according to the Global Advertising & Marketing Spending Forecast 2025-2029 from PQ Media.3 The report also highlights that advertisers are increasingly skeptical of social media as popular platforms relax their content moderation policies.
So, what’s the silver lining? The report points to steady consumer spending both online and in brick-and-mortar (read: local) stores. This presents a unique opportunity for businesses to connect with consumers in a trusted and familiar environment.
GBH, your one-stop worry-free media shop, is perfectly positioned for this moment. With GBH corporate sponsorship, you can connect with local, loyal consumers across multiple platforms in a brand-safe environment. Our trusted reputation and multi-platform presence ensure your message reaches the right audience without the stress of unpredictable content.

Exhale. That sounds pretty good, right? Contact us to learn how partnering with GBH can help you navigate these uncertain times and effectively market your business.

Do well by doing good. Sponsoring GBH is one way you can help protect your public media. And it makes good business sense. Keep reading to see why.

Too much this month. Let’s take a break. 😉
The public media system is a labyrinth. Edgar B. Herwick III, Host of GBH News’ Curiosity Desk and The Culture Show explains it all in this video:

Rooted (formerly Basic Black) centers communities of color through a timely discussion of current events, elevating underrepresented voices, and highlighting joy in the Black experience. The program premieres on YouTube and encores on GBH 2. Coming soon to GBH 89.7.

Premiere event! Each episode tells the dramatic story of an individual dinosaur whose remains are currently being unearthed by world-leading dinosaur hunters. 6-part series, June 16-18 on GBH 2 (primetime).

Throughout the day, listeners are treated to practical gardening advice, trivia, and last-minute weekend activity recommendations. Align your brand with these fun segments.

GBH and the public media system are one step closer to being defunded. The House of Representatives has just passed a rescission bill at the White House’s request, which would strip away $1.1 billion in already approved federal funding for public media. This puts everything that GBH and public media stand for at risk.
The thought of losing public media – an important part of maintaining our democracy and a source of free, safe, educational programming to all families, regardless of income – is hard to reckon with. But our work continues, and I hope you’ll join us in this fight.
Read on to see how your brand can support public media and protect GBH by sponsoring:

Holiday retail sales are projected to grow about 3%, reaching up to $1.62 trillion, driven by strong e-commerce performance (up 7%–9%). But here’s the nuance: while total sales rise, individual consumers are tightening their budgets. PwC reports that average holiday spending per person will drop 5%, with Gen Z cutting back by 23%1.
What does this mean for your brand? Consumers are still spending, but they’re more selective. That’s where GBH audiences stand out: they prioritize quality and brand reputation over low prices, and they’re up to 66% more likely to have a net worth of $2M or more2. Aligning with GBH during the holidays positions your brand where it matters most—with discerning, high-value consumers.

GBH continues to earn national recognition, with our podcast Scratch and Win being named one of the “10 Best Podcasts of 2025” by Apple. This award is a testament to our commitment to innovative storytelling and dedicated listeners.
Aligning your brand with our award-winning content is a powerful way to enhance your own brand’s reputation and reach a passionate audience.
